Data Analytics for Social Housing -

Intermediate Course · Two half-days · Microsoft Excel and Power BI · Follows Introductory Course

A practical, hands-on course for housing analysts who want to understand the impact of sample size on the accuracy of their survey of residents.

What's covered

  • Samples and populations: the difference between the people who responded and all tenants, and the bias that a larger sample cannot fix

  • Sample size and accuracy: how the margin of error shrinks as responses grow, and why quadrupling a sample only halves it

  • Confidence intervals: building and explaining a 95% interval for a satisfaction percentage, including small schemes

  • Power BI in practice: DAX measures, error bars, confidence bands on trends and minimum-base flags

  • Reporting responsibly: when a gap between areas or a change between periods is real, and how to word results for boards and residents

Who it's for

Housing professionals in income, repairs, housing management, or performance roles who work with data day-to-day but have had little formal training. No analytical background is needed — just everyday familiarity with Excel.

Requirements

  • A laptop with Microsoft Excel (Microsoft 365 or Excel 2019 or later)

  • No prior knowledge of statistics or data analysis

Format

Two half day sessions of 3½ hours each, delivered online or in person. Theory is kept short — most of the time is spent on hands-on exercises with real housing data.

This course is part of the Musgrave Analytics training programme for social housing, which also includes Introductory Analytics, Time Series Analysis, an Advanced Power BI Workshop, and a Manager Data Skills course.
